Crafting Sustainability: 12 Designers, 3 Lakes, 1 Vision
The Lacescape comity formed by the partners Transversal project, Pro Pogressione , INCA and associates, evaluated 61 applications, that responded to our open call for creators that will imagine with us sustainable futures by the Great European lakes, through craft and design. We discovered amusing art proposals that emitted love for the lake life.
Design community from all around Europe: Sweden, Hungary, North Macedonia, Ukraine, France, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Finland, Estonia, Norway, Tunis, Nederland, Czech Republic, have a great missionaries and agents devoted to the lake environments and its restauration through art.
We are grateful that we had a chance to have a look to many wonderful ideas and thankful to all whom applied.
The comity, selected 12 designers from all around Europe who will receive full support and opportunity to experiment, research, and prototype sustainable designs that enhance possibilities for the creative community and raise awareness of sustainability in lakeside environments.
Divided in 3 residency sites, happening in June and July, we are presenting you the selected designers form the Lakescape Open call:
In Lidköping, Sweden, by the Lake Vänern from 23th to 27 th of June, our partner Transfersal project will host the following artists: Marta Pejoska (NM), Rebeka Csiby (HU) Elna Aurand (FR) Michelle Heising (SE).
In North Macedonia, Struga, by the Ohrid Lake, from 10 th to 7 th of July, we will have the following artists in residence: Hajnal Gyeviki (HU), Marianne Hellman (SE), Linnéa Ekelöf (Spain), Viktorija Poposka (NM).
And in Hungary, Barnag, at the uplands of Lake Balaton Area, from 14 th to 20 th of July, artists in residence, Sandra Stigert (SE), Smomogyi Mark (HU), Jasmina Glavincevska (NM) and Maria Izabella Kazimierczak (PL), will experience alternative sustainable life surrounded by the Barnag woods and nature.
Designers will have a busy summer to develop their proposals into final, market-ready collection that will be presented at Lidköping – floating design market at 16 th of August, 2025. Peer exchange, workshops, experiential Lake -sites visits and collecting the lakeshore stories will enrich the artist’s explorations, toward advocating and creating regenerative solutions for lakeside communities and ecosystems. The Lakescape team is looking forward to see new inventions, collaborations and designs happening by and with the Great European Lakes.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Lakascape call eligible for duos/small team, or only for individuals?
Lakescape stipends are projected to cover one individual. If you want to apply as a duo/team, note that only one of you can be accommodated by the project to attend the residence and the floating design market in Lidköping.
Are we receiving applications only in English? And what if applican is not very good
in speaking English?
Only applications, submitted in English language will be considered! Since Lakescape is international project, our common language of understanding is English. Within the stipend selected artisans will be expected to have exchanging peer to peer workshops, will be placed in foreign countries and are expected to communicate with locals. For that at least moderate knowledge of the language is required.
Is this call restricted only to artisans residing by the lakeshores or is it open to larger artisans communities around Europe?
One of the project main goal is to bring sustainable solutions through design and innovation in lakeshore communities, implying that we are glad to support artisans within this communities.
But the call is not exclusively for them. It is for larger community of designers and artisans with authentic and meaningful connection (not necessary geographical) between their creation and lake life.
The selection is subject to geographical restrictions due to funding agreements, and the final cohort will reflect a distribution of artisans/designers based in the following regions:

Vänern (Sweden) - 3 designers

Ohrid (North Macedonia) - 3 designers

Balaton (Hungary) - 3 designers

Other Lakes in Creative Europe countries - 3 designers
We welcome applications from designers, artisans and craftspeople who:
● Are legally residing in a country participating in the Creative Europe Programme, including:
EU Member States Non-EU associated countries: Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Georgia, Ukraine, Armenia, and Tunisia.
What will be the dynamic of the residence placement? What kind of activities is expected from the residents during their stay? And what will residence placements offer to increase connection and knowledge about the lake live, as essential theme of the project?
Residences will be designed to offer relaxing lake and environmental experience from where you can learn and find inspiration for your work. Each resident during their stay will provide open creative workshop, presenting their way of work, methodology within the residence group and local artisan community. Detailed agenda of the residences will be created additionally after the selection process.
How we will arrange placements? And will there be an option for the artist to be placed on the residency they prefer?
Our consortium will place selected participants according to their artists profile and proposal. We would like to offer customized residence experience and opportunity for participants to gain knew knowledge and intercultural exchange among artistic group that is applicable to their work in the frame of the stipend. If you have preferences, we encourage you to mention that in your motivational letter and express why would you chose this placement and how is that relevant to your work.
If not selected, is there a possibility for the interested designers to attend some project activities and what are the ways for larger artisan community to participate?
Lakescape will enable attendance, participation and engagement for larger creative community and audience, during the residence placements, summit and Floating design market in Lidköping through open for public workshops, seminars, lectures. Also in the frame of the residence week, in each of the residence sites, floating exhibition platform/ market will be tested, jointly with artist in residence and local crafting communities. Everyone, nearby will be invited to join us.
